Ares saw
him for the first time at a Kilgore Police Department benefit dinner. She’d
gone with her dad as his plus one. Hayes Greer had gone by himself and brooded
silently across the same table as her, drinking whiskey and not saying a word.
It only
took that one time for her to become interested.
The next
time she saw him, he was doing another benefit—but this one requiring a whole
lot fewer clothes. And that was when she knew. She wanted him. Badly. But the
morose Hayes was too busy thinking about his sins to see what was right in
front of his face—Ares.
***
Hayes
Greer knew the moment that he saw the feisty Ares Downy again that he should’ve
stayed away. Maybe if he hadn’t done the stupid calendar, he wouldn’t be
questioning every single woman’s intentions.
Maybe if
he’d listened to that niggling feeling telling him to stay away, he would’ve
been able to do his job a little better. But seeing her with a knife to her
throat, in the middle of a building set to blow, made his usually well-wired
brain start to malfunction.
Because
nobody was allowed to touch her like that—only him. Nobody was allowed to scare
her, either. Not and live to tell the tale.

Just a little PSA for you: these are not standalones. Not only are they NOT standalones, these are technically second gen stories. So to get the full effect, and understand what is going on and all the characters that are mentioned and all that jazz; do yourself a favor and read the previous stories.
Ares Downy, Downy and Memphis' daughter, meets Hayes at a PD banquet that she went with her father to. What a first meeting this was, starting with almost tripping in front of him, putting her foot in her mouth and then finding out that her ex is his step-brother. She doesn't realize that she has just as big an impact on Hayes as he had on her, but Hayes has reasons for not wanting to take things further, he has severe PTSD and doesn't want to drag Ares down that rabbit hole with him. What he doesn't know is that Ares has already decided that she is not going to let him go and just has to get him to realize it!
This was so good! It was already a good story with just dealing with the family drama, then we add in the added bonus of mystery, danger, and violence; and we get an amazing story! I give Ares and Hayes 5 stars!

Ares Downy is a straight talking, unfiltered genuinely honest person. Not always a good thing when talking to a hottie ex-military man who suffers from PTSD, a man that also happens to be the stepbrother of her ex and a SWAT officer that works with her dad and brother. She has certainly found interest in someone heavily already ingrained in her life in many ways lol. Of course nothing can be as simple as just two people meeting and falling in love because that would be kinda boring and this book is far from that.
We saw in a previous book that there was a serial killer on the Texas highways and Hayes and his dad have been trying to figure it out. When another victim turns up, thanks to Hayes' budding relationship with Ares, he has a clue as to not only the link between the victims, but also to who the killer might be. Will they manage to figure it all out before another victim is taken, especially when the killer seems to be aiming his attentions at someone new... Ares!
I LOVE anything Lani Lynn Vale brings out to be honest but I can honestly say this one has been my favourite for a while I think. There was action, drama, humour, sexy times and I just plain loved it. I can't wait for the next one. 5 stars yet again!
