Though we’ve met before, and even spent a few days comforting each other while Sharlo was in a coma, Nolan Zimmerman still has the power to makes me nervous as hell. Not many people have that affect on me outside of appellate court judges. I’m naturally drawn to his broad features and dark complexion just as much as his well-toned body and undeniable charm.
He's not as cocky as I remember him being the first time we met, when he accidentally pushed me headfirst into a bush, but there’s still an arrogance that comes with his type: filthy rich and panty-soaking attractive. The way he stalked over to us was like watching a jungle cat in action. I shiver with the fantasy of witnessing all those muscles coiled and flexed to strike.
There’s a complex story waiting to be told behind those russet-colored eyes, studying me like I’m something of interest, and I suddenly have a peeked interest to hear it. Between the allure of his expression, his neatly trimmed beard, the Rolex on his wrist, and his thick torso strained beneath a designer button-down, I’m forced to remind myself why I chose to dive head-first into my career and forego a romance of any kind beyond the occasional tryst.
The kind of men I’m drawn to have always been trouble. The kind of trouble that can ruin my very existence. And Nolan doesn’t seem to be an exception.
Thankfully the brunette vixen wrapped around his side claims his body in a way that makes it crystal clear he’s unavailable, though I don’t miss how Nolan’s broad shoulders stiffen with her touch, as if he’s repelled.
“I do hope you’re not asking who I am,” Sharlo tells the woman, turning to secretly roll her eyes my way. “As unforgettable as it may be, we have met before. Several times when you were drunk off your tits.”
The woman’s narrowed gaze stays on Sharlo long enough to create a wall of tension between them. Bitch much? Sharlo doesn’t seem the slightest bit intimated or ready to give in anytime soon, reminding me why I’m glad she’s going to be a part of our family. I don’t have time for women who can’t stand up for themselves.
Nolan gestures my way. “This is Sofia Kendall. She’s Evelyn Walker and James Kendall’s sister.”
The woman gives me a once-over, sneering. “You’re related to Charlie Walker?”
“That’s generally how it works when your sibling marries someone,” I answer with as much snark as possible. “Even with rockstars.”
With a small grin that pops dimples into his cheeks, Nolan’s eyes flip from me back to the woman. “What are you doing here, Avery? In your last text you said you were calling it a night since you have to leave early in the morning.”
“The apartment is too quiet without you there,” Avery answers, pursing her lips and lifting one shoulder. “Besides, it’s an eight hour flight to Milan. I can sleep on the way.”
She’s a spindly thing with graceful features, almond-shaped eyes, and lustrous dark hair that flows down to her elbows in perfectly executed beach waves. I recognize her navy dress from Dior’s latest line and she wears the same red-souled Louboutins I bought from a second-hand store last spring. Without having to ask, I’m certain she’s flying to Milan because she’s a model. Based on her wardrobe and striking looks, I’d guess she’s a highly successful one at that.
My stomach roils with the alternative, that Nolan showers her with expensive gifts. Before I started to gain traction as a respected lawyer, I found creative ways to provide myself with a designer wardrobe so I’d be taken seriously in the professional world. I can’t fathom expecting expensive things to be gifted to me by a man. Even though Nolan’s sinfully good looks and family fortune would allow him to have his pick of any woman, I never imagined he’d put up with the entitled type.
“I won’t make it out of here before you have to leave,” Nolan tells her, pushing his fingers inside the pockets of his designer jeans as his tongue appears to wet his lips. Every movement he makes is controlled and deliberate, knocking his sex appeal up another notch. “It’d be best if you’d go back to your place.”
Avery sticks her lip out in a pout that makes me inwardly groan. “You’re not taking me to the airport? I’m going to be gone for three whole weeks!”
I subtly look away, rolling my eyes. Is this woman for real?
Frustration oozes from Nolan’s hard expression when I dare to glance back his way.
“Excuse us…I’ll be right back,” he says. Next thing I know, he’s leading Avery away by her hand, and unsightly pangs of jealousy are stabbing at my insides.
