What happens when you try to fix the past and end up threatening your future?

Scott is struggling. Grieving the loss of his brother, carrying the weight of his father’s expectations, and getting his ass kicked in the rink, he’s in a downward spiral. He needs a solution and fast, but when his steroid use is exposed, he’s close to losing his place at Owatonna and more importantly, on the Eagles Hockey team. Thrown out of his house, with nowhere to go and no future in sight, he only has one choice; agree to mandatory counseling, random drug tests, and get his act together. Only then will he have a chance at normal. Meeting Hayne, a senior connected to the world through his art, is a shock to the system. Moving in with him is his only option, but falling for the shy artist leaves Scott in an impossible situation, and one he can’t escape.

Hayne has always been that quiet, creative kid who sat in the back of class drawing instead of listening to the teacher. A talented artist, the shy and sensitive young man is struggling with the loss of his childhood friend. Seeing his sadness reflected in his usually colorful paintings, he decides to attend grief counseling and meets Scott, a lost soul in desperate need of light and color in his life. Taking in a homeless hockey player certainly was never part of his carefully orchestrated ten-year plan. But now that Scott is in his life, he’s discovering the joy of this man’s loving smile and tender touch is one of the most beautiful palettes on earth.

(3.5 Stars)

We saw a tiny bit of Scott's self-destruction in Ryker but we don't get the full extent of how far gone he is until this book. Scott had been living in his brother's shadow for most of his life, and when his brother died their father then started to push Scott in all things hockey. When the pressure and the guilt get to be too much, Scott turns to coping mechanisms: I.E. drinking and steroids. Once he is found out and suspended for a full year, his father proceeds to throw him out and tell him he doesn't want to see him again. Scott is on his own, has nothing and feels like he has nobody. When he runs into Hayne on the way to the mandatory grief counseling sessions, his finally gets somewhat of a break as Hayne ends up giving him space on his floor to sleep. Hayne is quiet and focused on his art, and while his brain is telling him not to help Scott, his heart is breaking for Scott and how lost he is. The two both have their own issues, and when the inevitable happens and they fall for each other at first they are on cloud nine. But the real world calls, and when Hayne sees just what type of person Scott is, will Hayne be able to trust Scott not to hurt him?

So, this was not my fav R.J. Scott book, it's still good don't get me wrong, but I felt a bit let down with this story. Maybe I just didn't see the connection between Hayne and Scott and there wasn't much as far as naughty bits go. I did feel for both characters, their pain at losing someone they loved, the stresses of trying to figure out life, all things that were truly relatable. In the end I give this 3.5 stars, and I hope this was just a fluke.
